了不起的蓋茨

Based on Mark Twain's novel, 'The Millionaire Pound Note' takes an interesting satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in the 50s England. England is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. The film shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when in an instant they find out that you're a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. Interestingly, 'The Millionaire' also briefly looks at how the English perceived Americans in that era. Rich  Americans were welcomed as outsiders and the poor were quickly shunned away. The fact that he's an outsider either makes him more appealing or the complete opposite. The story sticks to the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the movie from being a mockery of the British society. The movie drags at some point but the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of comedy to keep one entertained. A charming Gregory Peck totally nails the part and the luminous Jane Griffiths is a treat. Reginald Beckwith, as Peck's sidekick Rock is amusing. The ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points.

失去父親后,阿廖沙隨母親一起住到了外公家里與其說(shuō)是家還不如說(shuō)是一個(gè)人間地獄。外公脾氣暴躁、殘酷無(wú)情,經(jīng)常打孩子出氣,有時(shí)稍不如意還會(huì)對(duì)阿廖沙的外婆大打出手。同時(shí),他又非常自私吝嗇,竟然讓共同生活了一輩子的老伴去自謀生活。阿廖沙的兩個(gè)舅舅也不是什么好人,他們自私貪財(cái),天天鬧著分家。為了分得財(cái)產(chǎn),他們竟不顧手足之情,大打出手。同時(shí),他們還很殘暴,經(jīng)常虐待自己的妻子。

在黑暗的社會(huì)下。阿廖沙不得不去撿垃圾換錢(qián)。他背了個(gè)大袋子,在街邊巷子里撿一些破紙片、爛皮頭賣(mài)給廢品加工廠,好的時(shí)候能買(mǎi)半個(gè)盧布,不好的時(shí)候就只能與同伴去冒險(xiǎn)偷木板。而生活在當(dāng)今社會(huì)的我們呢?過(guò)著衣來(lái)伸手、飯來(lái)張口,什么也不用愁的日子。相比之下,我們有什么理由不珍惜現(xiàn)在的美好生活呢

小說(shuō)主要講了一個(gè)孩童到懸崖上采花,掉進(jìn)了峽谷。她出現(xiàn)在一個(gè)叫根鳥(niǎo)的少年的夢(mèng)里,根鳥(niǎo)出發(fā)了,一飛沖天,去尋找屬于自己的夢(mèng)。荒漠,草原,大山,村落,峽谷,小鎮(zhèn)、、、、、、一個(gè)個(gè)場(chǎng)景奇異而玄妙。根鳥(niǎo)成長(zhǎng)在現(xiàn)實(shí)與夢(mèng)幻之間,他決定以夢(mèng)為馬,度過(guò)他的成長(zhǎng)階段。恍惚,迷亂,搖擺,清醒,執(zhí)著,一往無(wú)前,他在痛苦中品嘗著快樂(lè)。越挫越勇,終于看到另一片春暖花開(kāi)。

根鳥(niǎo)在夢(mèng)中得到了女孩紫煙被困百合花山谷的訊息,萌生了要去找到這個(gè)山谷,并救出紫煙的善良的想法。為了這個(gè)想法他走上了尋覓之路。路途的坎坷,獨(dú)行的孤寂,騙子的阻攔,米溪和鶯店的誘惑,一切都,沒(méi)能抹去他內(nèi)心的念頭。一往無(wú)前,不達(dá)目的,誓不罷休!其實(shí),根鳥(niǎo)的這件人生大事,在常人看來(lái)是多么的荒唐而可笑啊,但關(guān)鍵是根鳥(niǎo)不覺(jué)得可笑,這是他由心底里生長(zhǎng)出來(lái)的善良的愿望,他不能懷疑。

根鳥(niǎo)當(dāng)真沒(méi)有懷疑過(guò)嗎?不是的,歷經(jīng)肉體和精神的雙重折磨后,他曾深深地懷疑過(guò)自己此行的意義。他罵自己是個(gè)傻瓜,他恨大峽谷,恨紫煙……是獨(dú)眼老人、板金這些好人在關(guān)鍵時(shí)候幫助了他,使他重返征途,最終實(shí)現(xiàn)理想。

我也該了解了解他了,我看了其中一本叫《根鳥(niǎo)》的書(shū)。可能大家和我一樣對(duì)這本書(shū)很陌生吧,沒(méi)有讓人一看到就愛(ài)不釋手的感覺(jué),好枯燥的名字,更不說(shuō)有吸人的魅力,但當(dāng)我看過(guò)簡(jiǎn)介后,我深深為書(shū)中的主人公根鳥(niǎo)所感動(dòng),他是來(lái)自一個(gè)大山深處的孩子,一個(gè)剛13歲的孩子,一個(gè)現(xiàn)在還應(yīng)該在父母寵愛(ài)中的孩子,但他卻一個(gè)人去追求他的夢(mèng),一個(gè)感覺(jué)不現(xiàn)實(shí)的夢(mèng)幻,他用了4年的時(shí)間來(lái)實(shí)現(xiàn)自己的夢(mèng)想。你知道他將面臨的困難是什么?是什么樣的毅力使他要去幫助一個(gè)從未見(jiàn)過(guò)面的,一個(gè)和他同樣大的女孩,遙遠(yuǎn)的西方是根鳥(niǎo)的向往,是他生活的勇氣。

---Book Review: “Camille”

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

The author pays homage to Hans Christian Andersen‘s compassionate tale with this faithful adaptation. Kids can relate to the duckling‘s dilemma; part of the growing-up proceis pulling away from those around you and developing a strong sense of self. Children have also witnessed or experienced the teasing that is part and parcel of childhood.

This agelestory speaks acrogenerations with its reaffirming message. In this age of instant gratification, Andersen‘s tale reminds readers that some things are worth waiting for and that a pleasure deferred (whether by choice or necessity) is often the sweetest one of all.

Pinkney‘s descriptive passages resonate with the splendor of nature‘s beauty. The glowing watercolors, filled with intricate details, make each blade of gravisible, and the delicately drawn, nearly transparent mosquitoes are as ethereal as they are in life. The subtle details incorporated into the scenes--a frog catching a passing fly at the pond and a tiny mouse perched by a crate in the old woman‘s cottage--make children take another look.

One day he heard a sound of whirring wings, and up in the air he saw a flock of birds flying high. They were as bright as the snow that had fallen during the night, and their long necks were stretched southward. Oh, if only he could go with them! But what sort of companion could he be to those beautiful beings?

‘I am too ugly even for a dog to eat,‘ the duckling thought. Jerry Pinkney‘s poignant text and rich artwork convey the timeleappeal of this tale of hardship and redemption. Anyone who has suffered the sting of ostracism can sympathize with the ugly duckling‘s plight and will relish the uplifting conclusion.

Mother duck to hatch a very strange eggs, this only "duck" monstrous not only, and looks ugly. Therefore, everybody laughs at it, discrimination against it. The surrounding the animals don't like it, so the mother duck and began to hate it. But the little ugly duck then alone run out and experienced many difficulties, heavy tribulation, the ugly duckling finally become the most beautiful white swan!!!!!

When the little ugly duck into the white swan, by everybody's praise, it said: "when I was an ugly duckling, I never dreamed of so much happiness!" When people see the beautiful white swan, always admire the beauty of it. But when it was the ugly duckling, who put it in the eye?

《霧都孤兒》讀后感

《霧都孤兒》這本書(shū)講的是主人翁奧利弗爾·退斯特是在濟(jì)貧院里出生,后來(lái)在棄嬰堂里生活了九年,然后又被警官帶回濟(jì)貧院,像奴隸一樣拍賣(mài),最后被棺材店老板領(lǐng)走,過(guò)了一個(gè)月左右,奧利弗爾·退斯特獨(dú)自前往倫敦,在路上遇到一個(gè)小偷,之后他就進(jìn)入了賊窩。后來(lái),有一次偷竊活動(dòng),他的同伙把一個(gè)老先生的包搶走了,奧利弗爾·退斯特被抓住了,奧利弗爾·退斯特向老先生說(shuō)了自己的處境,然后這個(gè)老先生就收留了他。讓他過(guò)上了一段幸福美好的時(shí)光。有一次,他去給人送錢(qián),半路被那同一個(gè)賊劫去,被參加一次入室搶劫,被子彈擊中,搶劫失敗后,半路被扔在路邊。第二天,被被搶劫的那一家救去。最后,主人翁的兩家聯(lián)合,還有警察,用正義力量擊敗賊窩。

這本書(shū)讓我懂得了世界上存在的邪惡比正義多,最終正義能擊敗邪惡。
